British Air Force Typhoon jets have joined forces with France's air force in a combined operation on an underground arms cache in Syria operated by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the UK's MoD.

The site, located using intelligence, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the announcement noted, and was situated in hills just above the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a series of access tunnels providing entry to the site... early reports are that the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the operation conducted Saturday night and every plane involved made a safe return, the MoD added.

The British jets were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

IS - alternatively referred to as Daesh - established jihadist rule over significant areas in Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike shows our UK leadership, and commitment to work closely with our allies, to eliminate any resurgence of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary remarked.

UK warplanes have conducted surveillance missions over Syria to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State after its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank the personnel of British forces involved in this mission for their skill and their courage," Healey commented. "Including them were thousands of British personnel on duty over the festive period. This action, to remove terrorist threats who pose a risk to our way of life, highlights how British military are ready to step up, throughout the year, protecting the UK within its borders and powerful internationally."

Last December, the American forces carried out what it called a "large-scale strike" targeting Daesh sites in Syria, following an assault killed two US servicemembers and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN reports IS still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in Iraq and Syria.
